Moore’s Law – After 50 Years Still Relevant and Beneficial

All but the youngest of us intimately know how much technology has changed our society, and nearly every facet of daily life. The power of the computer, at the core of the technology change, has continued to follow the 1965 prediction of future Intel co-founder Gordon E. Moore who published a paper entitled ‘Cramming more components onto integrated circuits’.

In his paper, he made a historic technology prediction, which can be concisely stated as 'The number of transistors incorporated in a chip will approximately double every 24 months'. Moore's Law has held true for 50 years. Technologists at DARPA and INTEL predict that it will hold true until approximately 2022.

The benefit of Moore's Law is that computing power has greatly increased while its cost has greatly decreased. This has resulted in powerful computers becoming ubiquitous, making possible the incredible technological changes benefiting our society in so many ways. One interesting way to view this change in computing power is to compare the navigation computer on Apollo 11 (Advanced Guidance System) to an IPhone 6. Paul Ledak a retired executive from IBM has written in Quora the following:

  • Number of transistors - iPhone has 130,000 times more than Apollo
  • Clock frequency - iPhone is 32,600 times faster than Apollo
  • Instructions per second - iPhone is 80,800,000 times faster than Apollo
  • Overall performance - iPhone is 120,000,000 times faster than Apollo

Here at Sonoran Systems, Inc. we too are taking advantage of the growth of computing power with the reduction in both hardware footprint and cost by optimizing our Sonoran Enterprise Management (SEM) product line to run on inexpensive mini-servers. This allows small to medium size businesses with their smaller budgets to take advantage of our powerful, tightly integrated suite of IT network management and productivity software products.

As your business grows over time you can step up to our corporate sized ArTrac G5 suite that is 100% compatible with SEM so your team will have no learning curve. Take a few minutes to review our SEM line including OSS, FMS, Front Desk and Barcode Central to see powerful IT products that enable you to manage, solve, and avoid problems while increasing productivity.
